Curriculum Overview for Grade 4*

English Language Arts

Frequent practice in reading, writing, speaking, and listening continues in grade 4. Through readers’ and writers’ workshop, each student engages in reading literature and informational text; in writing narrative, informational/explanatory, and opinion pieces; in speaking to convey his or her own ideas clearly; and in listening to understand the ideas of others.

Grade 4 English Language Arts curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Use active reading comprehension skills/strategies with a variety of texts
  • Support thinking with evidence from text that is read, both orally and in writing
  • Read orally with accuracy, expression, and appropriate pace
  • Maintain interest and focus during independent reading for increasing lengths of time
  • Demonstrate effort in reading
  • Express written ideas clearly with supporting relevant details in narrative, informational, and opinion genres
  • Connect written ideas with appropriate arrangement, using transitional words as needed
  • Use purposeful vocabulary with audience in mind
  • Vary sentence length and sentence structure, applying transitional phrases
  • Apply rules of grammar and punctuation accurately
  • Apply spelling strategies in written work
  • Demonstrate effort in writing


In grade 4, students develop fluency with multi-digit multiplication and division. Fraction knowledge expands to include fraction equivalence as well as learning about the relationship between fractions and decimals.

Grade 4 Mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Add and subtract whole numbers up to 1 million quickly and accurately
  • Solve multi-step word problems, including problems involving measurement and converting measurements from larger to smaller units
  • Compare the sizes of two fractions with different numerators and different denominators
  • Use visualized fraction models to explain why fractions are equivalent (1/2 = 2/4)
  • Add and subtract fractions with same denominator
  • Compose fractions from smaller fractions (1/4 + 1/4+ 1/4 = 3/4)
  • Multiply fractions by whole numbers
  • Convert into decimals fractions with denominators of 10 or 100
  • Locate decimals on a number line
  • Compare decimals and fractions using the symbols >, =, and <
  • Analyze, compare, and classify two-dimensional shapes
  • Persevere and maintain focus during math learning


Grade 4 students investigate and extend their knowledge in science as they explore topics of Force & Motion, Magnetism and Electricity, and Earth’s Environments through a STEM-based mini-unit on erosion control. They use science notebooks to demonstrate their understanding of science concepts and key vocabulary, make accurate scientific observations, ask questions and define problems, represent and interpret information through data analysis or diagrams, and demonstrate effort in science and adherence to science safety guidelines.

Grade 4 Science curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student to:

  • Research, design, and build reinforcements for erosion control along riverbanks
  • Explore natural forces such as Newton’s Laws
  • Investigate how electricity and magnetism work
  • Study the process of photosynthesis, plant adaptation, and survival

Social Studies

Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum, instruction, and assessment focus on Connecticut to help each student:

  • Learn about the State’s physical features, climate, natural resources, transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing, and their impact on economic growth
  • Compare and contrast Connecticut and the Northeast with other states and regions
  • Exhibit competency in relevant literacy, inquiry, and research skills

Library Media

Grade 4 Library Media curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Independently locate library materials, including award-winning books and basic reference sources
  • Create a multi-source report based on database and webpage research and a citation
  • Understand plagiarism through the practice of responsible use of resources


Grade 4 Music curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Perform improvisations on Orff instruments, and learn how to use the recorder to invent melodies and practice note-reading
  • Create songs, and analyze instruments’ sounds

Physical Education

Grade 4 Physical Education curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Demonstrate and apply motor skill performance in team and individual lifetime activities
  • Develop a health-enhancing level of physical fitness

Visual Arts

Grade 4 Visual Arts curriculum, instruction, and assessment help each student learn to:

  • Experiment with drawing, color theory, design, painting, printmaking, three-dimensional work, textiles, and art history/aesthetics
